What does "chain of custody" mean for body armor?+
Every piece of protective equipment (soft armor and vests, hard armor and plates, helmets, shields, and carriers) carries a verifiable, event-based history from manufacture (or mid-lifecycle registration) through issuance, inspection, recall handling, and final disposition. Events are appended, never edited, so the record stands up to audit and post-incident review.
Who can see what in the chain?+
Three layers. Provenance and recall status are always visible to every custodian. Chain topology is shown in summary and disclosed in full only by the segment owner's consent. Commercial data, POs, invoices, prices, is visible only to the two parties on that transaction and is never grantable through the chain. Officer identities stay inside the owning agency.
How do retirement, trade-in, recycling, and destruction work?+
Every end-of-life path is a tracked custody event. Retire removes an item from service while you retain it. Trade-In returns eligible armor to a vetted vendor for credit toward CPL-verified replacements, retiring the old serials the moment custody transfers. Recycle routes it to a partner that recovers the aramid, polyethylene, and ceramic into new non-ballistic products; Certified Destruction transfers custody to an IntelAlytic-certified facility where each serial is verified and destroyed. Recycling and destruction close the chain with a QR-verifiable certificate that resolves to the full record, priced per job.
Do I have to be an agency to use ArmorTrack?+
No. Manufacturers, distributors, and agencies each get a workspace tuned to their role, and officers can be invited to a scoped view of their own gear. Agencies can start with disposition services only and upgrade to full lifecycle management with zero re-entry.
What about NIJ recall notices?+
Notices are ingested from NIJ's advisory sources and fuzzy-matched to your actual inventory with confidence scoring, re-scanning on every inventory change. A recall notifies every custodian in affected chains without unlocking any identities or dates, notify-only.
It's free for agencies, how is that funded?+
Full lifecycle management, custody, inspections, incidents, recall matching, and the visibility model, is free for public-safety agencies, with no seat caps or feature gates. IntelAlytic is funded on the industry side: manufacturers and distributors get ArmorTrack with an ArmorList subscription, and certified disposal is quoted per job; your custody data is yours, and it exports on demand. There's no lock-in holding it hostage.
Can I bring in armor that was never tracked from day one?+
Yes. Most programs don't start at manufacture, so ArmorTrack lets any item enter the chain mid-lifecycle. Import a spreadsheet or scan what's on the racks; unknown serials register as mid-lifecycle and start accruing an append-only record from that point forward, even armor you're only registering so you can dispose of it accountably.
How is this different from an asset tracker or RFID system?+
Asset trackers answer “where is it and who has it.” ArmorTrack answers “prove what happened to it, and prove it's gone.” The difference is the append-only custody record, the layered visibility model that spans four organization types without leaking commercial or officer data, live NIJ recall matching, and disposition that closes with a verifiable certificate. RFID is on our roadmap as one more way to feed that record. Not a replacement for it.
